This workshop will empower educators to create an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that fosters a sense of belonging through the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Workshop topics will include understanding UDL, its impact on belonging, and the importance of developing reflective processes to ensure our practices meet the needs of neurotypical and neurodivergent students. Participants will explore tools and best practices for meeting the diverse needs of their students while promoting engagement, motivation, and academic success. They will leave ready to implement UDL-aligned practices within their own classrooms and in their wider school communities.

Participants will:

  • Gain a better understanding of the range of access barriers facing neurodivergent students and how UDL can be leveraged to address them.
  • Explore strategies for fostering belonging as it pertains to school communities, especially in the context of neurodiverse classrooms.
  • Explore UDL through a disability justice lens, considering how designing for access from the start can reduce the burden on students to disclose diagnoses, share personal information, or continually advocate for accommodations.
  • Add new resources, practices, and tools to their existing UDL-oriented tool boxes.
