About Us

Collaborating with experts to support schools and deliver professional development, ensuring the success of all students.

At VT-HEC we are driven to provide accessible and powerful learning opportunities that further the expertise, knowledge, and skills of teachers and others working in schools, leaving them better equipped to address the barriers that Vermont students face.

We recruit expertise from practitioners in the field to collaboratively design, develop, and implement programs. It is always our aim to remain nimble and responsive to the emerging needs of Vermont’s educators and to actively seek feedback to help clarify those needs and continually improve in our work. In recent years, we have significantly increased our capacity to address shortage areas.

We offer educator licensing and endorsement programs in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Health Education, and Work-Based Learning, as well as a graduate certificate program in Neurodiversity and Inclusion. Programs are flexible and designed to accommodate professionals working in schools.

Our professional learning workshops, continuing education courses, and consulting provide in-person, remote, and recorded opportunities on a range of emergent topics.

At VT-HEC, we believe that equity is foundational.

Equity is what allows authentically diverse communities to come together and experience the sense of belonging that facilitates meaningful growth.

We are driven to provide accessible and powerful learning opportunities that further the expertise, knowledge, and skills of teachers, leaving them better equipped to address the barriers that Vermont students face. These barriers include those that arise as a result of differences in perspective, experience, background, and identity in all of its forms. They also include the differential impact of climate change, the unique challenges of life in our rural communities, and other conditions both universal and specific to the Green Mountain State. It is always our aim to remain nimble and responsive to the emerging needs of Vermont’s educators and to actively seek feedback to help clarify those needs and continually improve in our work.

Our institutional culture is one of humility and lifelong learning. To advance equity in an unequal world, we endeavor to find, hear, and amplify voices that have often been missing from conversations, even and especially when these challenge our current thinking. In our programmatic and professional development offerings, and in our internal operations more broadly, we are committed to the individual and institutional learning and growth that will enable us to more fully embrace and promote equity. The development and ongoing evolution of our programs is informed by the guidance of advisors whose lived experience, diverse practice orientations, and professional backgrounds are vital in helping us center the impact of our collective work.

While we are proud of our efforts to promote equity, we know there is much more to be done to honor the strength, insight, and inherent richness that our diversity can afford us. To this end, VT-HEC has established a working group focused on equity. In its work so far, this group has identified several major areas of focus, which include ensuring that technology is used to effectively support access, providing resources and clear expectations to instructors and presenters around issues related to equity, identifying operational practices that are successful in promoting inclusion as well as those which require further evaluation, and building processes for holding ourselves accountable in this work. We are grateful for the dedication and collaboration of our team in our continued journey toward equity.

At VT-HEC, equity is a core value.

Equity helps create learning communities where people with different identities, experiences, and perspectives feel a sense of belonging, and where meaningful growth can occur.

We are committed to offering learning opportunities that are both accessible and useful. Our goal is to strengthen teachers’ knowledge, skills, and expertise so they are better prepared to address the challenges Vermont students face.

These challenges can come from differences in background, identity, lived experience, and perspective. They also include challenges connected to climate change, the realities of rural life, and other conditions that are unique to Vermont. We strive to remain flexible and responsive to the changing needs of Vermont’s educators, and we actively seek feedback to guide our work and improve our programs.
Our organizational culture is grounded in humility and lifelong learning. Advancing equity in an unequal world requires listening to and lifting up voices that have too often been left out—especially when those voices challenge our current assumptions.

Across our programs, professional learning offerings, and internal operations, we are committed to ongoing individual and institutional growth. Our work is informed by advisors whose lived experiences, professional backgrounds, and diverse perspectives help ensure that equity remains central to what we do.

While we are proud of the progress we have made, we recognize that advancing equity is an ongoing effort. To deepen this work, VT-HEC has established an equity-focused working group. This group has identified several key priorities, including using technology to improve access, setting clear expectations and providing resources related to equity for instructors and presenters, reviewing operational practices to strengthen inclusion, and developing systems for accountability. We are grateful for the commitment and collaboration of our team as we continue this work together.
