Eating disorders (ED) are a growing problem for Vermont kids. Schools can play an important role in preventing and identifying eating disorders, and supporting students who are struggling.

This webinar provides participants with a foundational understanding of how educators and schools can help support the prevention of ED development. Educators will gain tools to recognize warning signs, challenge harmful myths, and foster classrooms that promote body respect and well-being. Participants will learn how to use language that supports all bodies and the role of an educator when an ED is suspected. They will leave with confidence to better support their students and colleagues in building a more weight-inclusive classroom and school.

Participants will:

  • Understand key ways educators and school personnel can support the prevention of EDs, including recognizing weight bias and using body – and food – neutral language.
  • Learn to identify the warning signs of EDs and disordered exercise, and what to do when you see them.
  • Identify resources to support a student with an ED, and learn how to involve families or health professionals.

In response to Vermont Legislative ACT 56, this training was created to align with the Eating Disorder Education Guidelines for School Employees section of the Vermont Model School Protocol for Suicide Prevention published by the Vermont Department of Mental Health.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) provided financial support for this program. Funding for this training was part of a greater award which provided 83% of total costs and totaled $375,999. The contents are those of the authors.
