Cross Neurotype Communication: Considerations for High-Stakes Interactions

Price:

$50

Instructor(s):

Hannah Markos, M.Ed.

Professional Learning Hours:

1.5

Intended Audience:

Educators, administrators, and other professionals whose work impacts students from PreK – 12 and beyond.

Participants will gain a culturally-oriented understanding of the elements of communication that many Neurodivergent scholars suggest are most likely to vary across neurotypes. Suggested practices for considering, affirming, and accommodating these differences, particularly in the context of high-stakes interactions, are introduced  and included as a resource within the facilitation guide.

Participants will:

  • Understand the four cultural categories that vary not only within neurotypes, but also across neurotypes and across settings, and identify some of the factors that can cause an individual’s communication style to vary in different environments.
  • Understand the elements of neuro-shared and neuro-separate spaces, and consider the inclusivity of learning environments through this lens.
  • Evaluate existing and new practices for communicating effectively with families and students within and across neurotypes during high-stakes interactions, such as IEP meetings, discipline related conversations, or any circumstance in which power dynamics may cause a student’s communication to be influenced by increased stress.
  • Critically examine and respond with practice shifts to the impact of power dynamics on communication between educators/administrators and students/families.
  • Engage individually or in a group with the workshop’s facilitation guide to further extend the learning; begin school, classroom, or district-specific planning; and review recommended practices.
