This workshop will support educators in creating integrated units that build strong foundations in reading comprehension through hands-on, inquiry-driven instruction. Grounded in the Science of Reading, this approach aligns with research showing that young children need rich opportunities for knowledge building, oral language development, and vocabulary growth to support deep comprehension. Participants will create an integrated unit that weaves together literacy skills and science or social studies. Emphasis will be placed on how to make these units responsive to children’s authentic interests and lived experiences, creating learning environments where children feel ownership and joy in their investigations.
Participants will:
- Create an integrated, inquiry-based unit of study.
- Design NGSS-aligned science and C-3 aligned social studies investigations that support vocabulary, language, and literacy development.
- Explore how to create units that are responsive to children’s identities, questions, and observations.
