SUMMARY:Understanding and Supporting Individual Learning Needs (Course)
DESCRIPTION:Date: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstructor(s): \n\n\n\nRuth Durkee\, J.D. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type: \n\n\n\nHybrid \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGraduate Credits: \n\n\n\n3 \n\n\n\n\n\nTopics: \n\n\nGeneral Education\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants must attend all three days: Oct 19th\, Nov 19\, Dec 7 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis graduate course will investigate the sensory components of cognition and communication. Sensory integration is the ability to receive sensory information from internal senses and external inputs\, integrate the information\, and create an adaptive response to the sensory information. Participants will attend three workshop days\, and also deepen their understanding of concepts presented in workshops through readings\, asynchronous activities and assignments\, and application of content to professional practice. Participants will leave with a foundational understanding of the neurobiological development of sensory processing and the importance of integrating the senses for functional and accessible learning and communication. Register for the workshop series instead.

SUMMARY:Unlocking Cognitive Potential: Getting the Brain Online for Learning
DESCRIPTION:Date: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrice: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstructor(s): \n\n\n\nGillian Boudreau & Ruth Durkee\, J.D. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type: \n\n\n\nHybrid \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGraduate Credits: \n\n\n\n3 \n\n\n\n\n\nTopics: \n\n\nGeneral Education\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA typical school day is full of static that can drain students’ ability to think and learn. Not being sure where materials are\, having directions introduced in a confusing way\, or having too much presented at one time can cause stress that interferes with learning. In this webinar we will discuss how to free up your students’ emotional bandwidth and then help them channel it using specific\, effective learning and regulation tools. We will also explore how to use cognitive science and psychology to regulate and engage the brain\, structure dynamic lessons\, and create supports using a Universal Design for Learning perspective. \n\n\n\nParticipants will: \n\n\n\n\nRethink and rewire patterns in well-meaning classrooms that can prevent safety and whole-brain-capacity. \n\n\n\nDevelop teaching strategies to offer structure\, challenge\, and opportunity. \n\n\n\nIdentify working memory strategies that address cognitive load\, use visuals and chunking\, and scaffold.

Participants will explore the tiers of intervention\, including assessment methods\, differentiation processes within each tier\, progress monitoring\, and support strategies. Additionally\, the series will offer effective collaboration techniques with staff members and parents\, providing practical tools to implement the multi-tiered system in your school building. \n\n\n\nParticipants will: \n\n\n\n\nGain comprehensive knowledge of tiered SEL intervention systems\, enabling effective implementation tailored to diverse classroom needs.\n\n\n\nAcquire practical skills in assessing and addressing significant social\, emotional\, and behavioral difficulties within classrooms. \n\n\n\nDevelop personalized action plans to initiate and sustain a tiered SEL intervention system\, fostering a supportive environment conducive to student well-being and academic success. \n\n\n\nInterpret and utilize current\, reliable progress monitoring data to assess intervention effectiveness and inform decisions related to student progress. This will enable participants to better comply with Vermont’s new special education law changes\, which require evidence of response to functional skill interventions before determining eligibility.
