Research has linked Restorative Practices with improved school climate, increased student attendance, improved test scores, increased graduation rates, reduced violent and serious incidents, and decreased punitive and exclusionary discipline responses.
In this series, participants will receive an introduction to HRP and how it connects to trauma-informed practices, mindfulness, social-emotional learning (SEL), and equity. They will explore how these fields weave together to build and strengthen a school community. This approach recognizes that educators cannot meet their students’ needs if their own needs are not met, and therefore, seeks to change systems and practices to be more human-centered and support the needs of everyone. Participants will learn practical ways to create powerful shifts in school culture, engagement, collaboration, and active responsibility.
Participants will learn to more effectively:
- Create the conditions for learning and meaningful engagement by increasing students’ capacity, skill, and motivation in the classroom.
- Shift into a “doing with” mindset in interactions with students and colleagues.
- Use specific practices such as circles, connection routines, and restorative communication to build community and respond to everyday challenges and conflicts.
- Review adult, student, and classroom routines through a restorative lens.
- Explain and advocate for the use of HRP in their work.
Why is this event in person? We find that our hands-on restorative learning environment is much more powerful when we are all in the room together. Many of the interactive activities we will do together cannot translate to a virtual experience. Participants should be able to attend both sessions. The second session builds significantly on the content of the first.
This series is part of a pilot 6 day microcredential in Holistic Restorative Practices. The microcredential is for beginning and seasoned practitioners who would like to transform how they and their schools create conditions for learning, building community, responding to conflicts, and supporting adult and student well-being. Strategies are drawn from the fields of restorative practices, trauma-informed approaches, equity & inclusion, mindfulness, and social-emotional.
