Special Education Workshops A Great Success

During 2011-2012 VT-HEC brought a series of workshops to the state that focused on a variety of topics for both new and seasoned special educators. Based on participant feedback, it appears that the workshops provided needed information for direct application with students in work settings. Feedback from these workshops will inform the 2012-2013 workshop series, so stay tuned! Click here to view participant feedback.

Jen Patenaude, a highly respected practitioner and evaluation specialist from North Country SU as well as a long-time VT-HEC instructor and trainer presented for our series of 4 workshops focused on the “Thread of Special Education – Referral to Evaluation.” The sessions covered key areas of that process: Data Collection, the Comprehensive Evaluation, the IEP Process and Specialized Instruction. Interactive work sessions with specialists in each disability area allowed participants to ask questions directly related to their practice. The sessions were held in Montpelier and were very well attended.

In addition, Jen presented at our two day workshop “Learning Profile Analysis for Struggling Learners: Advanced Assessment Topics.” This advanced session provided an overview/comparison of measures of intelligence, discussion of the causal relationship between cognitive and academic achievement testing, strategies for choosing the tools that best align with evaluation concerns, common learning disability profiles and subsequent implications for learning and programming. Feedback from this session strongly suggests a repeat in 2012-2013 year.

Tiffany Cassano, a PBIS coach, special educator, administrator and VT-HEC coordinator and instructor presented at our 2 day workshop: Functional Behavior Analysis and Behavior Intervention Planning in Colchester and then again in Rutland. Day 1 focused on developing a Tier 2 and 3 systems response to identifying and supporting challenging behavior through the use of functional behavior analysis. Day 2 focused on Tier 3 and the proper interventions and supports needed for these students. Participants found these sessions extremely valuable as they provided immediate application to their work with their students.

Summer Partnerships with VT Principals’ Assoc.

This Summer, the VT-HEC is partnering with the VT Principals’ Association to offer a great event in the Brain, Mind and Education program.
